What is an MDM?

MDM stands for a Mobile Device Management solution and is used by companies to protect their employee's phones, PCs, etc. The MDM can be configured, for instance, to block emails accounts other than the company account, disable bluetooth file transfers, install a corporate anti-virus solution, etc.

We use our MDM in a different way. Rather than the usual use case, where the company would typically protect all devices in the same way, we apply bespoke restrictions to an individual device - such as a client's phone or tablet.

In this way we can protect mobile phones, tablets, dekstop PCs, laptops (both Windows and Apple Mac), Amazon Kindle tablets, and some smart TV solutions. We can, for instance, turn off the app store, turn off the ability to take photos and videos, or restrict the device to a particular WiFi network.

In most cases we can ensure the client is allowed to safely achieve the tasks they are allowed to but restrict them from carrying out more risky activities online.

Because many solutions will not work on the same device as other solutions we are constantly researching and developing new ways to provide the restrictions that may have been approved for your client by the Court of Protection or from a Best Interest decision. We won't be able to decide on what solutions to recommend until after our assessment but we have various options available to us depending on the risks, the types of devices (such as Apple or Android), and what the MDT wishes to achieve (e.g. monitoring, alerting or restricting).
